The climate crisis is real. After three years of extreme drought, farmers in Tharaka Nithi, Kenya, were recently caught off guard by devastatingly heavy rainfall. This led to widespread destruction as livelihoods and homes were ruined by the floodwaters. It is essential that farming communities adapt and build resilience.
Here, Community Champions emerge as pillars of hope and innovation. Equipped with practical knowledge of regenerative agriculture, they are turning the tide – teaching farmers how to protect their land and grow a better future in an uncertain world.
- Working Together “I connect my farmers with companies who sell seeds and other farming products, and to buyers. The more farmers we have working together, the easier it is to find buyers for our products.’ – Lucia, farmer and Community Champion
- Regenerative techniques “Regenerative agriculture helped me to stop worrying about the rain… so now, after two years, I am very happy with Farm Africa! I’ve seen the results!” – Charles, a farmer and Community Champion
- Community Champions “I love being a Community Champion. I want all the farmers I support to succeed in their farming. Nothing would make me happier.” – David, a farmer and Community Champion
Through Farm Africa, farmers are mastering practical techniques like integrating trees into farming, selecting resilient seeds, mulching to retain soil moisture, composting for soil enrichment, and rotating crops to prevent pests.
And, crucially, selected farmers are trained to become Community Champions, spreading valuable knowledge and expertise throughout their communities.
Fundraising ideas
Whether you choose to have a Farm Africa collection during your harvest service, hold a harvest lunch or even organise a sponsored walk (those of you who know our famous welly walks will understand!), every pound you raise will help farmers to transform their lives.
Service collection
A collection during or after a service is a simple idea that your congregation will be familiar with. Why not use our service ideas below to theme your service around Farm Africa’s work and inspire everyone to donate?
The Farm Africa twist: Pass round an African bowl or basket, or perhaps even a farmer’s welly instead of the traditional collection plate.
Cake sale
Who doesn’t love cake? A cake sale is always sure to go down well and it’s amazing how much flour power can raise. You could have a simple sale after church one Sunday, or plan a special event, perhaps combined with a coffee morning or community sale on a Saturday. Make sure you give potential bakers plenty of notice and remember not to undersell their hard work!
The Farm Africa twist: Make some cakes and sweet treats using the crops grown by our farmers.
Give it up
A common fundraising idea at Lent, this idea can also work well at any other time of the year too. Challenge members of your congregation to raise sponsorship in return for giving up their favourite food or drink for a set amount of time. Chocolate, coffee, or cake are always high on peoples lists for what they would give up. What will it be in your church?
The Farm Africa twist: Take the challenge to the next level and see if your congregation could live below the poverty line for five days. In those five days, each person spends just £1 a day on all their food and drink. Tougher than it sounds, and a truly eye-opening way to see just how important Farm Africa’s work is for farmers who live on less than £1 a day.

Regenerative agriculture
Farm Africa is helping to increase the production, incomes and climate resilience of 60,000 farmers in Embu and Tharaka Nithi in Kenya by training 50 farmer groups, each with 200 members, in regenerative agriculture.
A key feature of the project is training 250 village-based advisors (VBAs) in regenerative agriculture techniques, who then share the knowledge with more farmers across the counties to support them to grow more fruit and vegetables at home for their families. The training covers post-harvest handling, storage, kitchen garden establishment and agribusiness acumen.
The project also builds the capacity of local and national governments in developing policies on the promotion of regenerative agriculture. We will influence research institutions to adopt regenerative agriculture best practices, as well as input distributors at a commercial level.
