Farm Africa proud to support Ethiopia’s 2020 Green Legacy Campaign

Farm Africa took part in Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Campaign in the Oromia Region, planting local tree nurseries across five hectares of land in the town of Mojo, and 26,950 tree seedlings in Galorape and Abine Garmama. The campaign took place on Wednesday 29 July in a national movement to protect Ethiopia’s landscape and diverse fauna.

This year the Green Legacy Campaign set the ambitious target to plant 200 million tree seedlings across Ethiopia within 12 hours. This will contribute towards Ethiopia’s National Green Growth initiative. The initiative, which has been backed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, aims to reach national green environmental goals and combat the effects of changing climates and deforestation in the region. The government has set an annual target to plant five billion indigenous tree seedlings.

The regional representative of the Oromia region showed his appreciation for Farm Africa’s support for the initiative. “Regarding this green legacy campaign, we asked different support from our partners working with us, based on that, Farm Africa responded quickly with a satisfactory and meaningful reply, so, I would love to thank Farm Africa for all these.”

Farm Africa’s contribution will help the region make a meaningful impact towards the national green growth initiative, with representatives in the region aiming to plant a total of 3.4 billion tree nurseries by the end of the rainy season in October.

Farm Africa was excited to be involved in this important campaign and planted tree nurseries as part of three of its projects: REDD+, SHARE and Central Rift Valley Landscape Management. These projects work with farmers and partners to protect Ethiopia’s natural resources while boosting the livelihoods of agricultural businesses and smallholder farmers.
