Increase food security and nutrition

The five-year NOURISH project aims to achieve resilient food security for smallholder farmer households in key regions of Tanzania. These are the central-northern zone (Singida, Dodoma, Manyara) which suffers from acute food insecurity, and Southern Highlands (Songwe, Rukwa) which faces chronic malnutrition.

NOURISH targets smallholder farmer food producers at greatest risk of food security, with emphasis on those with less than two hectares as well as other vulnerable groups. Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and farm organisations will also benefit from the project.

high-potential value chains are the key focus of this project: sorghum, sunflower, beans, and vegetables.

NOURISH will tackle barriers to smallholder farmer food security through three interconnected pathways. First, strengthen smallholder farmers’ climate-smart agricultural knowledge, access to inputs and finance so they can produce a sufficient quantity and diversity of nutritious food crops. Second, increase and diversify food supply to, and accessibility of nutritious food in, local markets by empowering smallholder farmers and MSMEs. Third, improve use of household resources to provide nutritious and diverse food: promoting nutritious diets, household food budgeting, and enabling women to have greater influence in household decisions.

The project is funded by Norad and is led by SNV in partnership with Farm Africa and five local organisations including two local CSOs, RECODA and MIICO.
